Academic Awards, Dual Degree Option, and Tuition Fees

After successful completion of all modules and performance achievements, the Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main will award the graduates the specific academic award of "Master of Laws (LL.M.)" in Legal Theory.

There is also a Dual Degree Study Track Option on offer:

  • one complete course term during fall term at Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main and two spring course modules at a partner university offering a dual degree track (currently: ULB in Brussels); in this study track, graduates earn the LL.M.-Degree from the Goethe University Frankfurt/Main AND a second (dual) degree from the other host partner university involved.

Moreover, all graduates will receive an EALT certificate which has been notarized by all partner universities participating in the EALT's Master's Course in Legal Theory.

TUITION FEES and Payment Conditions:

The tuition fee currently amounts to EUR 7.200,- for the basic single degree track at the Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main (excl. costs for housing, living and course books, etc.; also excl. mobility costs for additional optional short-term mobility phases or dual/multiple degree tracks at other partner universities; for the optional dual/multiple degree tracks the specific tuition fee arrangements at the partner universities apply: see section Mobility Windows).

Under its tuition waiver programme, the master's course offers applicant students the possibility to apply for a limited number of tuition fee waivers (selection will be based on academic excellence; for related details please refer to the information in the application form).

For general grant programmes for studying in Germany, please visit the Grant-Database of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). An estimation of living costs for studying in Germany can be found here.

The tuition fee for both terms (fall and spring term) of the Master’s course at the hosting Goethe University Frankfurt/Main currently amounts to € 7.200,-. The tuition fee is exempt from value-added tax. In case of opting for a dual or multiple degree track (below) and changing host university for spring term, the tuition fee at GU Frankfurt will be reduced and participants pay the additional applicable partner university fee for the spring term at the spring term host university as indicated below.

Travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses for the regular course terms at GU Frankfurt and – where applicable – for optional dual/multiple degree tracks or for optional short-term mobility windows (single elective modules followed at other partner universities) as well as any applicable Students’ Union membership fees are not covered by the tuition fee. Teaching material will be, in general, provided in digital form. If, in exceptional cases, teaching material in traditional form is required, it has to be paid as well (e.g. books). All bank charges incurred for remitting the tuition fee are borne by the applicant.

Upon notification of admission by the Program Director the full tuition fee is due. The payment is to be made in one instalment (only in particular cases and upon separate application it is possible to pay the first instalment upon notification of admission and the second instalment at the beginning of the programme). Cancellation of the application has to be submitted in writing no later than six weeks before the start of the program. The cancellation fee amounts to 10% of the tuition fee. If an application is not cancelled in due time the cancellation fee amounts to 100% of the tuition fee unless the candidate provides a substitute. The tuition fee is not refunded if the applicant drops out of the program. The Program Director reserves the right to cancel the program for compelling reasons before its start. In this case all tuition fees paid are refunded. The Program Director reserves the right to make necessary changes to the curriculum and make organisational changes at short notice.

The number of places is limited; admission to the program is subject to available places, time of application and applicants’ qualification.
